The main symptom of fibromyalgia is of course pain, unlike arthritis this pain is not caused by inflamed tissue. The pain in fibromyalgia is widespread pain which lasts for longer then three months. The pain is located in the joints, muscles and other soft tissues of the body.

Fibromyalgia can occur by itself or with another disease typically rheumatoid arthritis. Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis have many of the same symptoms as fibromyalgia, and so diagnosis can be very difficult.

Fibromyalgia sufferers often also suffer from fatigue this is due to a disrupted sleeping pattern. Fibromyalgia disrupts the non-REM phase of sleep. There are also multiple tender areas all over the body these are extremely sensitive spots that will be painful if touched.

The symptoms of fibromyalgia can be elevated by excessive noise, weather change or just emotional stress. Several different disorders have similar conditions and symptoms so proper tests in a hospital must be run to discover exactly which disorder the patient is suffering from. The soft spots are unique to fibromyalgia, and a doctor may well examine you to look for these tender spots.

As a result from fibromyalgia, your body may ache all over and even your face might ache. Patients have an extremely low pain threshold which makes things that should not normally cause pain so severe that it disables them.

The tender spots are usually located around the elbows, shoulders, knees, hips, back of the head and chest. If a tender point is touched it can cause immense pain and muscle spasm.

Because the cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, so is the cure, although it can be managed with treatment. At this moment in time the curing of fibromyalgia is impossible. There are several different treatment options available, most focusing around medication.
