Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease also referred to as idiopathic arthritis. Scientists do not currently know what causes juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, but there is currently a lot of research going on to try and determine the causes and possible treatments.

This disease is an autoimmune disease; this is where the body is unable to tell the difference between a threat and what is its own tissue. As a result the body will start to attack its own tissue. White blood cells move out of the blood stream into the linings around joints.

Because the immune system is overactive attacking the body’s own tissue the synovium or the joints lining gets swollen. The synovium continues to grow until it is exerting pressure on the bone, which will eventually result in damage.

There are several different types of JRA, and so the causes of each may be different. Scientists are debating whether the list should be broken down into further categories or not.

The treatments of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis depends upon the actual type the person is suffering from, there are three main types of JRA.

The idea of arthritis affecting children is a strange one, a child can suffer unnecessary for months or even years until a link to arthritis is made and the correct treatment path can be embarked upon.

JRA can affect a child without giving up for months or years at a time. JRA can actually cause the bones in the leg to grow at different rates to each other, having one leg shorter than the other can make children walk with a limp which puts extra pressure on the knee.

The causes of JRA are unknown, sometimes the symptoms will just disappear, it’s like the child has grown out of them.
