Psoriatic arthritis is a form of arthritis that affects sufferers of psoriasis. Psoriasis is a fairly common skin condition that affects 2% of the population, if that’s difficult to visualize, imagine 50 people, one person out of 50 will have psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a disease that affects the skin and nails, resulting in red scaly skin and pitted broken nails. Psoriasis is an inflammation of the skin, psoriatic arthritis is a form of arthritis that affects about 10% of the people that have psoriasis. People whose psoriasis affects the nails are more likely to get this disease.

It normally occurs between the ages of 40 and 50, although it can strike at any time in a person’s life. Patents normally suffer from psoriasis for many years or decades before the onset of psoriatic arthritis, however in some rare circumstances the arthritis can occur first. The two do not often occur together, in around 80% of patients the skin disease was first.

This type of arthritis is a systemic disease that can also cause inflammation of internal organs as well as joints. The symptoms of it are swollen and painful joints, as well as the swollen internal organs we mentioned earlier. Patients suffering from it will experience joint pain similar to any other form of arthritis.

The exact cause of it is not known, however both arthritis and psoriasis tend to run in families. There is currently no known cure. Although there is no way to cure it there are treatments available. One such treatment is methotrexate. Physiotherapy sessions are also used to help relieve this disease pain.

This illness is not just limited to adults, it can also affect children. Juvenile psoriatic arthritis is a disease that is extremely difficult to diagnose, especially if the joint problems appear before the rash has time to develop.
