Knee is one of our main joints that hold the body weight and makes us mobile. Since knee is heavily under stress most of the times of the day, there is a high tendency of getting it damaged. Lifting weight in the wrong way may also cause damages to the knee. When it comes to arthritis, knee is one of the main victims for many types of arthritis.

When a knee is damaged due to arthritis, there are many ways to handle it. Medical treatments (using drugs), exercises and therapy, surgery are a few of the treatments available for treating a damaged knee. Regardless of the treatment, the damaged knee should be supported with external support throughout the treatment period and afterwards. If the supporting is not done properly, the recovery process may be delayed indefinitely.

When it comes to knee supports, knee braces come first. This is the main way of supporting the damaged knee. There are many varieties of knee braces available in the market designed for different conditions of arthritis and different conditions of knees. As an example, different types of arthritis will cause different conditions in the knee. After carefully studying the arthritis types and end conditions, researchers have come up with a vast selection of knee braces. Some braces are used for reducing the pain in knees as well.

In the case of a knee surgery, patient will have to be cautious. The knee supports worn before the surgery will not be appropriate after the surgery. If these supports are tried after the surgery, the recovery process may delay and sometimes, the knee may be permanently damaged. It is always advisable to contact your doctor before trying out knee supports as there are many things to be considered before recommending one for the patient.

Knee problems caused by arthritis are one of the most common conditions that can be specially found among the senior citizens. Researches show that about 12% of the US senior citizens suffer from osteoarthritis, the type which makes the knee joints painful.

Knee is one of the most important joints in our body. It bears a constant stress generated by our body weight and carries the whole body when walking. If the knee is attached by arthritis, then a whole lot of demands cannot be catered by the knee making the person less mobilized. Due to the importance of knee, there are special treatments are performed when knee pains are produced by arthritis. The arthroscopic surgery, or in other words, arthritis knee surgery is one of the options available for treating this condition.

Many patients prefer arthritis knee surgery as the last resort for getting rid of the knee pain and many cases have proved the knee surgery answers the condition well. Knee surgery has many variations based on the condition of the damaged knee. The procedure can differ from osteotomy, arthroscopy, synovectomy, and finally total knew replacement. While all the above procedures offer relief from knee pain, total knee replacement will offer a higher stability and mobility.

There have been a couple of researches performed to validate the knee surgery option and its benefits. The results of the researches did make a noise among the interested parties as it eventually suggested that there is no advantage out of the arthritis knee surgery. For the researches, there have been two groups selected where one groups went through a proper knee surgery and the other went through a fake surgery. After monitoring the two groups for two years, researchers have found no difference in abilities of the knee.

Now, there are suggestions coming up that suggests alternative treatments rather than going for a surgery. It is now up to you to read more about the subject and see what’s best for you.

Alternative medicine has become popular among the communities than ever as more and more successful results have become known. There are many alternative medicine methods that have different origins from different parts of the world. Due to this diversity, each of these alternative medicine methods differs from one another in many ways.

Homeopathy has become one of the popular alternative medicines and offers treatments for many known deceases. Arthritis is one of the deceases that homeopathy really looks forward to cure. Let’s have a look at how homeopathy can treat arthritis.

As we are aware, there are many types of arthritis. Homeopathy attempts to treat many types of known arthritis and usually follow a similar approach for all of them. Usually, in homeopathy treatments, arthritis is recognized as decease attached to the aging of the body. Therefore, homeopathic treatments aim at stopping further damages to the bones and joints, and produce relief from the pain and stiffness.

Unlike allopathic treatments, homeopathic treatments do not offer quick results. As homeopathic treatments are focused on eliminating the cause of the decease, it takes longer to heal. If the homeopathic treatments for arthritis are applied for a long time, there will surely be a reduction of pain and stiffness. At the meantime, the conditions of the joints will also improve as this stops further damage.

There are many medications used for arthritis in homeopathy treatments. These medications are applied based on the symptoms and the condition of the joint and related area. These different medications use different materials for applying the treatment. As an example, Belladona method is used for treating joints where there is inflammation and redness in the effected joint.

There is one important consideration to remember; when homeopathic treatments are applied for arthritis, it might not be good to apply any other medicines. For some cases, a combination of medicine could be used, but most of the cases, you will need to follow what you are instructed to follow in terms of medication. If you are interested in treating arthritis using one or more methods of medicine, then you need to get correct information and instructions from qualified professionals.

The causes of arthritis pain are a many. However, the most common reason is inflammation of synovial membranes and tendons or muscle strain and fatigue. It is also another commonly known fact that the arthritis pain ranges greatly from person to person. Therefore, sufferers and doctors have been in a constant struggle from time unknown to relieve and ease the pain experienced by people suffering from arthritis. So our focus today is such alternative method of relieving pain, known as Tai Chi.

Tai Chi originates from martial arts and is known as an amazing exercise which consists of graceful and deliberate sequences of movements. The purpose of Tai Chi is to reduce stress and bring about relaxation by balancing out the universal energy Ying and Yang. As per the name, Tai refers to a culture from the Eastern part of the world and Chi refers to life’s vitality or the spirit energy that surrounds us.

In order to benefit from Tai Chi it is important to get the support of a Tai Chi professional or become educated about the subject from an authentic Tai Chi master. Tai Chi itself is a vast subject matter; however for the purpose of relieving pain in people suffering from arthritis, ‘the moving meditation’ method is known to be the most effective.

Although it is called moving meditation or as it is called sometimes, meditation in motion does not require any strenuous physical exercise. There’s no need to jump around or do aerobics, no running or walking about in hurry, no hard and fast rules or any vigorous activity. Moving meditation is all about having the feet firmly rooted on the ground (preferably a field of grass or a wooden floor without wearing slippers or shoes) while moving your arms and torso in a graceful sequence like a poetical dance. While one exercises these movements, your mind is set free in a meditational trance. Once the mind and body merges in a perfect synchronization, the person practicing Tai Chi will feel the energy from the universe flowing throughout the body.

In simple words, what is meant by Tai Chi meditation in motion is another form of meditation that draws your attention to those graceful energies around us, which our conscious minds are usually unaware of. By making conscious efforts to be in touch with universal energies, not only are we able to understand different dimensions of life but we are also able to attain high levels of spiritual growth while relieving stress and becoming relaxed.

If you can recall, last week we explored the best exercises for legs and feet. In this week’s article, we will explore the best exercises for arms and shoulders that will help people suffering from arthritis.

The joint pains are not quite the same everywhere. Some experience extensive pain in the upper body while many others experience a lot of pain in the lower body. Your job, the postures you maintain throughout the day and even your food habits accounts in different ways to the consequences you may suffer. So here are some tips to keep your upper body in good form while being medicated for arthritis.

Exercise 06
Remember the endless stretching you had to do during school days? It is now time to get back to the same exercise. To start off this exercise, sit or stand with your forearms pressed together in front of your body in such way that your hands will close up on your face. Now bring your elbows to either side of the body in a ‘hands up’ position with your palms facing forward. The next step is to stretch your hands over the head as far as possible to give your body a full sized stretch. Make sure you place your elbows in line with the side of the body as you perform the third action. Repeat this exercise twenty times over.

Exercise 07
Now we are about to start off an exercise named the ‘forward arm reaches’. Once again sit or stand comfortably. Fold your arms in such way so that the elbows will be bent with your hands pointing at the ceiling. Be in this position for few seconds and start moving your hands overhead. If you are having difficulty stretching both arms together, do one at a time. If you find it difficult to stretch an arm at full length, it is a good idea to hold it from your other hand for support. Now lower the hands back to the start position and repeat the sequence twenty times over.

Exercise 08
Here’s something we do to exercise shoulders and wrists. Put your palms and fingers together in a forward position with your fingers facing forward direction. Now hold your arms stretched out together in front. Now perform a movement to pull hands towards your chest which makes your elbows to bend outward to each side. While you do this, press your palms and squeeze shoulder blades together. Repeat the action over again for the other side of the body as well.

Exercise 09
Fingers are a troublesome area for most people suffering from arthritis. So here’s how you do a finger walk and a thumb circle. Sit comfortably placing your fingers on the table and fingers pointing ahead. Now slide the thumbs towards each other. Next, slide each finger one at a time, towards the thumb. Do the walking for every finger. Once the little finger has finished its walk, lift your hands and put them down straight. Now make circles with the thumb. Repeat this exercise 20 times over.

Exercise 10
However, the best thing of all for everyone suffering from arthritis is to take a walk everyday. You don’t need to jog or walk fast. Just take all the time you want and relax while having a walk for few minutes everyday. Walking will help relax muscles and stretch your back, shoulders, legs and joints that may become stiff due to your various postures (e.g. sitting) throughout the day.

Living with arthritis can be difficult if you are in pain. But as with everything else in life, practice makes living with arthritis simpler. The best way to achieve this is to exercise.

In this article, we will explore the top 10 exercises that will help arthritis pain. If you have never used the following exercises, my recommendation is that you start off with ten rounds per exercise and increase it gradually. Increasing exercises gradually will include ten rounds per day for five days followed by 15 rounds per day for another ten days and finally twenty rounds per day from there on.

It is commonly believed that most people suffering from arthritis experience pain in legs more than in anywhere else. Therefore, we will start off with exercises for feet.

Exercise 01
Relax your body and sit upright in a chair with your feet stretched out in front. Now start circling your right foot clock-wise for twenty consecutive times. Do the same with your left foot. Once you are done with clockwise movements, start circling your right foot anti-clockwise for 20 times followed by your left foot. As you gain practice with this exercise, you can try circling both feet at once; clockwise & anti-clockwise.

Exercise 02
This exercise will take care of your heels and toes. Sit forward on a chair with your feet flat. Relax yourself and start lifting your right heel while keeping the toes on the floor. Hold it down for 3 seconds before you change the position of the foot to face toes up and heel down. Repeat the same with your left foot. Repeat the exercise 20 times per foot and once you gain practice, an additional 20 times, moving both feet together. However, be careful not to sprain your ankles.

Exercise 03
This exercise will deal with your knees. Relax your body and sit on the edge of a chair or stool keeping your back upright. (It is better to sit on a chair/stool with arm rests incase; you tend to fall since you are seated at the edge) To start off the exercise, lift your knee as high as you can without bending your back. If needed, you can use your hands to assist the knee. Hold it for 3 seconds and lower your leg back to the starting position while keeping your abdominals tight.

Exercise 04
This exercise will deal with the ankles. Sit comfortably in a chair which has a good back support. Now slowly straighten your right knee. Next slightly bend the knee while bending the ankle. Do it in such way so that toes will point straight ahead. Hold it for three seconds before you reverse point the ankles to face the ceiling. Repeat the same exercise for 20 times for each leg.

Exercise 05
We now move in to hip and calf stretch. Simply stand with arm support against a wall and place one foot in front of the other to keep you supported. Make sure your feet are apart and are pointing forward. It is also important to make sure that your shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle are kept in a straight line. Now keep the shoulders and hips square and tighten the abdominal muscles. Next step is to move forward very slowly bending at the ankles while keeping weight on the heel of the back foot.

Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis has many impacts on your joints. For arthritis, there are number of causes including genetic defects, musculoskeletal defects, injury, overuse etc. In this short article, we try to discuss how protect your joints from issues such as injury and overuse as we may not have any control over some of the factors such as genetic defects.

The body weight is one of the key factors when it comes to your joints. If you are too heavy for your joints, then there is vulnerability for damaging your joints. That’s simply your body weight puts more stress on your joints. The most vulnerable areas are hips, knees, back and feet. The next key element is doing exercises. This helps you to strengthen the muscles around your joints so there is a less probability for injury.

A good posture protects you from joint injuries as it is the ideal positioning for your joints. You may damage neck, knees, hips and back by not adopting good posture. In your body, you have hundreds of joints and they vary from the scale. Some are smaller and weak and some are bigger and stronger. Whenever you perform something, make sure you use bigger and stronger joints as much as possible. This will reduce the damages caused for small and weak joints. When you do something stressful to your joints such as lifting weights frequently, make sure you give enough rest to yourself between work. This will reduce the risks caused by wear and tear of joints.

Whatever you do, try to change your position and posture regularly. This will reduce the stiffness of your muscles and joints and would reduce the risk of getting them hurt. And finally, when your joints are in pain, never ignore it. It is just a warning to tell you to stop stressing them and see a doctor.

Since arthritis has become one of the most prominent diseases, we tend to relate whatever symptoms that look like arthritis to this disease. But medical experts say that there are three other prominent diseases that show symptoms similar to arthritis. Most people are mislead by these symptoms and may start worry about arthritis. Let’s have a look at these three culprits and then we know what to worry about.

Clubbing

This is basically observed as deformity of fingers and finger nails. Although this can be directly seen in the fingers, there can be severe impact to patient’s lungs and heart as well. The regular external symptoms include fluctuation and softening of nails, loss of normal 165 degrees angle between nail bed and fold, increased convexity of nail fold, thickening of the whole finger and shiny aspect of the nail and skin. The most prominent two symptoms are spiking fevers and transient rashes. Although this was first discovered and believed to be just for children, now it is accepted that this is also common among the adults.

There are several theories about the cause of Still’s disease. The main theory is such that, it suggest that a micro bacterial infection causes the disease. However the real cause behind Still’s disease remains a mystery.

The usual symptoms for Still’s disease includes, waves of high fever that rises to 40 centigrade, a faint transient skin rash which is non-itching and salmon colored, a flu-like pain throughout the body, muscle pain and severe joint pain.

Since the symptoms present in many different ways, diagnosis is difficult. There are number of tests performed for diagnosis and what actually happens is an elimination procedure for other diseases. If the tests prove that the symptoms are not caused by other disease, then it is suspected that the patient has Still’s disease. Usually the blood tests indicate high volume of white blood cells suggesting there is a serious inflammation. One specialty is that the blood tests for rheumatoid arthritis will be negative.

The fever usually runs for months and it not controlled, causes for high fevers may damage vital organs. Once medical treatments are given, the symptoms and the disease fade away with the time. But in some special cases, the remains of the disease can be seen even at the adulthood of the patient.

We have looked at how rheumatoid arthritis affects arms, wrists, shoulders and elbows in our previous post. In this post, we will further explore how rheumatoid arthritis affects your lower parts of the body.

If you ask any person suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, their first complaint would be pain in the feet. But luckily for some people, feet would not even be a worrisome concern. If you haven’t been diagnosed yet, here’s a clue. One of the earliest manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis is painful swelling of the MTP joints. A common visible symptom at this stage would be your foot becoming broader and hammer toe deformity developing. It will also cause severe pain and sometimes, the sufferers would not be able to walk properly. If this condition persists for over a week, you must get the clue that it is a warning sign. Thus, giving it immediate medical attention is a good choice.

Knees are another commonly affected area because rheumatoid arthritis will make one prone to massive synovitis and knee effusion. If the effusion persists it could increase the risk of popliteal cyst formation and rupture. Knees are a vital place that should be protected as it is vulnerable to many varieties of deformities. As rheumatoid arthritis progresses through your body and especially if it progresses without proper medical attention, erosion of cartilage and bone will cause loss of joint space damaging medial, lateral and retropatellar compartments of the knees. At such point secondary osteoarthritis may also follow and the only way to get over pain and restore mobility would be possible through knee replacement surgery.

Somewhat luckily, hips are not commonly affected throughout rheumatoid arthritis. The prevalence is very rare during the onset of rheumatoid arthritis and if at all it gets affected it will have only very little impact throughout later stages. However if you encounter one of those rare incidents, pain and stiffness of the hip will be accompanied by radiological loss of joint space and juxta-articular osteoporosis. Along with this at a later stage, secondary osteoarthritis can develop where hip replacement will usually be necessary.
