Fibromyalgia is similar to arthritis in the way that the joints are painful, however fibromyalgia does not result in damage to the joints. The cause of fibromyalgia is still currently unknown however more women experience the condition than men.
The amount of the population that fibromyalgia affects differs in different countries, in England it affects 1% of the population and in America it affects around 2%. This could suggest a possible link between diet, or the environment and the condition.
Fibromyalgia is where the patient is in continuous pain, or they experience pain from things that should not actually be painful.
Fibromyalgia is an area of interest for scientists, and they have recently discovered that in many patients who suffer from this disease there are increased levels of a nerve chemical. Serotonin is a chemical found in the brain, researchers have discovered that this is exceptionally low in people with this disorder. As a result scientists believe that fibromyalgia may be caused by an over sensitive central nervous system (CNS).
People who suffer from fibromyalgia usually experience fatigue; doctors believe that this is caused by the loss of sleep. Fibromyalgia affects the non-REM phase of sleep, disrupting the normal sleeping pattern and so resulting in sleep loss.
Over 80% of the people affected by fibromyalgia are women, suggesting a possible link to gender and the disease.
Nobody knows what actually triggers fibromyalgia, although there have been plenty of suggestions put forward. Psychological distress, trauma, and infection are the most likely triggers and causes.
The disease normally strikes between the ages of 35 and 80, and although it predominantly affects women it can also affect men and the elderly.
Fibromyalgia is not caused by inflammation, but it just seems that patients have more sensitivity towards pain than normal people. Some people are in continuous pain, and have a very low pain threshold.
The condition can be made worse by weather changes, noise, or emotional stress. Some days the condition may be ok, while other times the individual may be in a lot of pain.
